I was asked to produce a new drawing of this by Bait Muzna Gallery when I took them my portfolio. As I've drawn this subject before and from the same reference photo I had to make some changes to the new version. It was initially quite a challenge, but then I realised my drawing style has altered, developed since the first drawing in 2008
(below), and I am more interpretive rather than literal of my subjects now. Once I had the basic drawing done and the light source decided the tonal work was done without the reference. I think it has worked well. I was a bit reluctant to draw more ruins, especially as my head (and reference folder) is full of portraits I want to do, however I enjoyed this one more than
On Guard.

This is so wonderful! I love the mood that is created with the pen and ink! Your composition is masterful, by the way... wow!
ReplyDeleteThank you Katherine, you are very kind.
DeleteI like your new style too. Ciao.
ReplyDeleteCiao Wawos grazie
DeleteBoth drawings are beautiful, Sue, but I find that the newest one is more exciting! I like your new drawing style!
ReplyDeleteGrazie Lucia.
DeleteI like the impact of the latest one, the newer style seems more confident.
ReplyDeleteIt will look good on the gallery wall!
I hope so. I'm impatient for them to be hung in the gallery :)
DeleteI like them both, Sue. I'm curious why the gallery wanted you to do another.
ReplyDeleteGood drawing skills are such a gift. So great that you can add your own interpretive personality to them as well. I was just told yesterday that an artist without imagination isn't going far... (or something to that effect).
Be well.
The gallery provides artwork for corporate clients and sees my work as going to their hotel ones. Then, hopefully, as my work will be for the tourism industry, when I showed my portfolio they wanted to have my Oman ruin & similar landscapes. The original '08 version of this is in UK, so they asked for a new version. This is the reason I did On Guard too.
DeleteIt is interesting to see the evolution of our own style and interpretation. Great work!
ReplyDeleteGreat work Sue, great to see the evolution...both are good butI prefer the new one too
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful Sue. You're interpretive version, helped by your bolder, more confident pen work, has made the fort look much more 'commanding' somehow. Excellent work as always.
ReplyDeleteWow! Great, Sue!
ReplyDeleteIt worked VERY well! Wonderful work, Sue!
ReplyDeleteWell it sure did work out more that fine! I understand the reluctance, because not only your drawing skills have altered, so then it's quite hard to go 'back' to a subject you've already left behind. Inspite of the reluctance this si super well done.
