Jubilations

Queen Elizabeth II © Sue Pownall 2012
I'm not a Royalist, but I could hardly ignore this auspicious day -
the Diamond Jubilee of the Queens coronation on 2 June 1953.

The photo reference I used is © Camera Press/Cecil Beaton

Sorry I'm not feeling 100% and didn't bother to fix the scan: the skin tones are off as is the gold leaf.

  1. What a beautiful thing to say. If I was the queen I would be honored that you drew my portrait. You are are incredable artist, that is the queen and it is her essence you captured.

  2. What a fantastic portrait Sue. You've made it look so simple but, as Edward has said, you've truly captured the essence of her.
Sorry to hear you're not 100% ... I hope you feel better soon. ;-)

  3. Yes, I agree, what else to sketch on such a weekend! I'm also not a royalist but I really enjoyed sketching her. Love yours! She's much younger here than the one I did :0)

  4. Well done...
I wondered perhaps at first if you had done a freeze on the television... (don't know if you have the equipment to do that where you are right now) but sometimes it's nice to sketch from the TV that way.

Well done as usual.... Be well!

    1. I don't own a tv Marian, but I do stream programs through the computer. I think it's Laurelines who does a lot of tv sketches, but I just enjoy the programs and forget to press pause :)

  8. This one's lovely, Sue...I really like the way you've finished the face (great likeness) and left the rest mostly gestural line drawings. Such a delicious combination of techniques!

Thanks for the well wishes on my new Etsy shop, and the fan mail too...it's nice to know that my art is somewhere out there being loved. :-)

    Best, Susan
